Explaining the SIPP code system is relatively easy. It began with the suppliers and the form descriptive of the class and specification of the hire car has in some way or another spread across the industry.
The form I will lay out in this article is the four lettered SIPP code as per suppliers like Hertz and various brokers. An example of the SIPP code is EDMR which as you will soon learn means an economy four door manual with air conditioning guaranteed.
The first letter is descriptive of the classification of the vehicle in terms of size and ultimately capacity. In the example I have given above is E for economy (Ford Fiesta sized) - other popular categories are C for Compact (Ford Focus sized) and I for Intermediate (Ford Mondeo sized).
The second letter can describe the amout of doors expected or guaranteed on the car. It simply falls to three classifications in this respect: B is a guaranteed two door, C is it could be either two or four door and D is guaranteed four door. Other classification that could go there are V for van (MPVs like the Ford Galaxy) or T for guaranteed convertible.
The third letter in the code is simply one of two variables. M for manual transmission and A for guaranteed automatic transmission.
The final letter again is a simple two possible variable with N for not guaranteed air con and R is for guaranteed air conditioning.
